Major changes to student visas announced

In a long awaited announcement the Minister for Immigration, Chris Bowen, yesterday announced that the government will implement all of the recommendations of the recent student visa review.

This is terrific news for university undergaduate and post gaduate students. In addition to relaxing the financial evidentiary criteria the government has announced that students who complete 2 years of a bachelor degree in Australia will have an automatic work rights for a further 2 years in any occupation or discipline. Students completing a masters degree by coursework will also obtain 2 years work rights on completion while research students can obtain up to 4 years. These work rights do not attach to vocational courses at or postgraduate certifcate or diploma courses.

Together with a raft of other changes recommended by Michael Knight this now makes Australia extremely competitive and a very attractive destination for genuine students.
